Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee

A view of Roaring Fork in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, 2002. World renowned for its biological diversity, there are more than 19,000 species documented in the park. Scientists predict an additional 30,000–80,000 may yet be identified.

Smithsonian connection: Through an ongoing All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, scientists, including Smithsonian biologists, have contributed to a better understanding of the park’s moths, leeches, oaks, birds and beetles.
