Zoo-based veterinarians and scientists aid in the recovery of endangered species and habitats throughout the world. The giant pandas at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. –baby shown here– are part of a global research, conservation, and breeding program. There are currently fewer than 1,600 wild giant pandas living in the mountains of central China.
