Detailed photos of the newly discovered Cyatta abscondita fungus-farming ant species, taken in the National Museum of Natural History’s Ant Lab, help Smithsonian scientists identify unique physical traits of these tiny insects. The new species is a ‘living fossil’ that can help scientists reveal the way in which the first fungus-growing ants may have lived.
