Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture
Boxing headgear worn by Muhammad Ali
Created by: Everlast Worldwide, Inc., ca. 1973
The headgear was used by Ali at the 5th Street Gym in Miami. It was in this gym and the surrounding neighborhood, with its vibrant mix of racial, political and cultural identities, some have argued, that Clay took his first crucial steps to becoming Muhammad Ali.
