Giant pandas Tian Tian (front) and Mei Xiang spent their morning wrestling and playing in Washington D.C.’s first snow of the season at Smithsonian’s National Zoo, Thursday, Dec. 6. Giant pandas are native to central China where snow is common in the winter, allowing Tian Tian and Mei Xiang to feel right at home when snow starts to fall. Giant pandas are classified as endangered with an estimated 1,600 left in the wild.

Tai Shan, the 2-year-old giant panda cub at Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. surveys the season’s first major snowfall from high in a tree in his exhibit. Giant pandas are native to central China where snow is common in the winter, making Tai Shan feel right at home when snow starts to fall. Giant pandas are listed as endangered with an estimated 1,600 left in the wild.

Tai Shan, the giant panda cub at Smithsonian’s National Zoo digs into a special frozen treat he received on his first birthday, July 9, 2006. His mother Mei Xiang looks on before joining him. The frozen treat, prepared by National Zoo nutritionists, was made of bamboo leaves, carrots, pears, beets, apples and a touch of apple juice suspended in ice. Thousands of visitors came to the Zoo to celebrate the cub’s birthday. Tai Shan and both his parents live at the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat at the National Zoo.

He also enjoyed a special birthday frozen treat made for the occasion by National Zoo nutritionists. Tai Shan, the National Zoo’s giant panda cub, plays in a tree at his home at the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat. The cub turns 1 year old on Sunday, July 9. To celebrate his first birthday, the National Zoo is hosting a public party on Sunday with traditional Chinese dancers and music, special birthday crafts and talks by panda staff. Tai Shan, whose name means “peaceful mountain” in Chinese, was conceived in 2005 through artificial insemination in a procedure performed by National Zoo scientists and veterinarians.

The cub weighs 40 lbs. and although he has been chewing on bamboo for a few months, he has only recently started eating it. Adult giant pandas eat up to 40 lbs. of bamboo each day. Tai Shan and his parents live at the National Zoo’s Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat.
