Artists rendering of planet orbiting red dwarf
M. Weiss/CfA

This artist's impression shows how the surface of a planet orbiting a red dwarf star may appear. The planet is in the habitable zone so liquid water exists. However, low levels of ultraviolet radiation from the red dwarf have prevented the occurrence of chemical processes though to be required for the origin of life. This causes the shoreline to be devoid of life.
