This Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian will teach people how to preserve veterans’ keepsakes. In the program “We Remember,” experts from the museum and the Library of Congress will advise visitors on how to care for letters, photographs, medals, uniforms and other memorabilia from family members. Informal information sessions will be held throughout the event, which will take place in the Potomac Atrium. Visitors are invited to bring their objects to the museum for caretaking advice.

Other Memorial Day weekend activities at the museum recognizing military service include:

  • Patriot Nations,” an exhibition detailing the history of Native American participation in the U.S. armed forces, reaching back to the Revolutionary War. It is located on the second floor.
  • A display on the third floor in memory of prisoners of war and those missing in action.
  • A 1948 Indian Chief motorcycle on display in the Potomac Atrium. The motorcycle was manufactured by the Indian Motorcycle company, which has a history of contributing to war efforts stretching back as far as World War I, when it provided the military with up to 50,000 motorcycles.

This program is a part of the National Native American Veterans Memorial Initiative and is made possible through the support of Bank of America.
