The July issue of the Smithsonian Associates’ program guide features a variety of educational and cultural programs, including seminars, lectures, studio arts classes, performances for adults and children and local and regional study tours. Highlights this month include:

Elaine de Kooning: Portraits”

Mingle at the Museum Event

Tuesday, July 7; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery

The public is invited to a private, after-hours view of the National Portrait Gallery’s exhibition “Elaine de Kooning: Portraits,” guided by its curator Brandon Brame Fortune. Fortune provides an introduction to de Kooning and her work, followed by a light reception and the opportunity to tour the exhibition, where she will be available to answer questions. The public can also try their hand at art-making activities inspired by de Kooning’s work.

Dr. Seuss, American Icon: The Legacy of Theodor Seuss Geisel

Wednesday, July 15; 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m.

Smithsonian’s S. Dillon Ripley Center

The late-July publication of the recently rediscovered What Pet Should I Get? provides the perfect opportunity to look at the life and work of writer and illustrator Theodor Geisel, who as the beloved Dr. Seuss taught generations of children to read—as well as to think. Seuss scholar Philip Nel delves into the energetic cartoon surrealism of Seuss’s illustrations and the swingy rhyme that keeps young readers hooked on his verse. The public will enjoy a light reception after the program featuring Seuss-inspired green eggs and ham.

Smithsonian Sleepover at the National Portrait Gallery

Saturday, July 25, 7 p.m. to July 26, 8:45 a.m.

Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery

The first-ever Smithsonian Sleepover at the National Portrait Gallery will be held July 25. Kids, ages 10 to 14, and their chaperones will discover the stories of poets and presidents, visionaries and villains, actors and activists whose portraits fill the museum’s walls. Inspired by photography, painting, print making and drawing, they will play games and take an immersive guided journey through the museum. Sleepover guests create their own portfolios and display their work in a one-night-only gallery exhibition.
