Smithsonian Celebrates 100 Years of Badges, Cookies and Lessons in Leadership
The Smithsonian is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts with displays, public programs, special discounts, blog posts and online programs across the Institution. A special website was designed to list all events and exhibitions related to the Girl Scouts anniversary: http://www.si.edu/Events/GirlScouts100.
The National Museum of American History celebrates with “Girl Scouts 1912 – 2012,” a special exhibit case highlighting the organization’s history from its early years to today through uniforms, camping and community activities beginning June 1.
The National Portrait Gallery is presenting “Juliette Gordon Low and the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts” until May 2013. The painting of Juliette Gordon Low, a patent award, a membership pin and photographs of Low when she commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Girl Scouts are on view.
Smithsonian Programs for Girl Scouts
Smithsonian museums are offering exciting public programs to engage minds and hands just for Girl Scouts to enjoy before, during and after the “Girl Scouts Rock the Mall” event—a sing-along on the National Mall June 9.
Free hands-on activities take place at these Smithsonian museums: the National Museum of African Art, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Freer and Sackler galleries, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Portrait Gallery and the National Zoo.
Girl Scouts can explore five different Smithsonian museums—the National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum—with the “Girl Scouts Discover!” self-guide. The guide is available in two grade levels for younger and older Girl Scouts and in Spanish and English. The self-guides will be downloadable from the website.
Inspired by the Girl Scout tradition of trading trinkets or “swaps” when meeting new friends, the National Museum of Natural History is offering the opportunity for Girl Scouts to learn about ocean science and environmental stewardship while creating a swap from recycled materials on Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to noon.
The National Postal Museum is offering a stamp collecting activity in which Girl Scouts will learn about women’s history through postage stamps while starting their own collection Sunday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the National Museum of American History.
Also located at the Museum of American History is the National Museum of African American History and Culture’s “Showstoppers: A Hat-Making Workshop” activity, where Girl Scouts can design a paper hat in the style of businesswoman and hat designer Lula Mae Reeves June 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Ask Smithsonian Experts: Q&A with Women Who Work at the Smithsonian
Girl Scouts and their leaders can connect with women who work at the Smithsonian—many of whom are former Girl Scouts—to ask career questions, peek behind the scenes and discuss what the Smithsonian might look like in the future when today’s Girl Scouts are part of the team. Smithsonian staff members will share what makes their jobs special, how Girl Scouting inspired them and advice for Girl Scouts seeking to pursue science, art, technology, preservation, history and communications on an interactive Q&A website May 18–June 8.
Discounts for Girl Scout Troops
Special discounts for Girl Scouts will be offered by the Smithsonian June 2–11 at the IMAX theaters, Planetarium, Live Butterfly Pavilion and Ride Simulators. More information about these discounts can be found on the main website.
