Isaac (Granger) Jefferson
In 1796 Jefferson made George Granger Sr.—Jefferson called him “Great George”—Monticello’s overseer. He was the only enslaved man to rise to that position and to receive an annual wage. He ran Monticello’s blacksmith’s shop (from 1783) and the nailery (from 1794) until his death in 1799. His son, Isaac, started his working life in the nailery and also became a blacksmith.
