Feeding Gulls- Gary Hedgepath, who grew up in Anacostia, visits Anacostia Park daily to feed the seagulls.

“Reclaiming the Edge” looks at the worldwide movement to restore rivers in urban communities through the examination of the efforts targeting the Anacostia River and by extension, similar undertakings in Louisville, Ky., Pittsburgh, London, Los Angeles and Shanghai. “Reclaiming the Edge” is the exhibition portion of an ongoing research project on urban waterways initiated by the museum in 2010 and adopted by the Smithsonian Institution as one of its Grand Challenge efforts. Held as part of the museum’s 45th anniversary commemoration, the exhibition is also the first developed in conjunction with the organization’s expanded mission to focus on issues affecting contemporary urban communities.
