Local artist collective DC Listening Lounge will present its annual Sound Scene, a day of interactive audio art installations and sound games, at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Saturday, July 9, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. This highly anticipated event transforms the museum into a sonic playground, filled with collective-created experiments designed to engage the ears as well as the eyes. Sound Scene is free and open to all ages; advanced registration is encouraged.

Sound Scene IX: Sculpting Sound will feature live music, interactive audio exhibits and DIY sonic construction projects. Visitors will be able to capture their personal sound signature, take an aural tour of the museum, improvise a song with the Hirshhorn plaza fountain and embark on a choose-your-own audio adventure. Featured installations let participants shift sand with the sound of their voice, compose physical melodies through “Sonic Twister” or try their ear at “Sounds Against Humanity.”

Founded in 2004, the DC Listening Lounge is a self-described rag-tag group of local audio enthusiasts, found-sound collectors, radio journalists, musicians, artists and coders who meet monthly to discover and appreciate new sounds. Sound Scene has been held annually around the city since 2008. This year marks its first partnership with the Hirshhorn.
